A single-judge bench of Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand emphasized the need for immediate action and directed both governments to ensure adequate compensation for the victims’ families and the injured. The matter has been listed for further hearing on January 10, 2025.
The tragic incident occurred when an LPG tanker collided with a truck on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway, triggering a massive fire that engulfed the area. At least 37 vehicles were destroyed in the inferno, leaving 14 people dead and 30 others in critical condition. The court remarked that suo motu cognisance was taken to explore measures to prevent such catastrophic fire accidents in public areas.
Adding urgency to the matter, the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety has instructed the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan to submit a detailed report on the incident by January 20, 2025. A high-level committee has also been set up to thoroughly investigate the incident, including examining the road’s construction to determine if it contributed to the accident.
In response to the tragedy, both the central and Rajasthan governments have announced financial aid for the victims. The Rajasthan government has declared an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. Similarly, the central government has pledged Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives.
Justice Dhand’s observations highlight the importance of ensuring safety on public roads and providing justice to the victims. This case underscores the pressing need for better infrastructure and stricter safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
