NEW DELHI: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court demanding a “high-level” investigation into the tragic deaths of three civil service aspirants due to severe water-logging at a coaching center in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar. The unfortunate incident has raised serious concerns about the efficiency and accountability of the city’s civic authorities.
The petition is scheduled to be heard by a Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. Advocate Rudra Vikram Singh presented the case today(on 30th July), prompting the Acting Chief Justice Manmohan to state-
“If the files are in order by 12:30 PM, schedule the matter for tomorrow.”
The PIL has been filed by Kutumb, an organization advocating for public welfare. The petition highlights the severe neglect and possible corruption among the authorities responsible for the maintenance of the area. The Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) have been named as parties to the case. The PIL asserts that the incident resulted from “Corruption and the inadequacy of civic authorities in the national capital.”
According to a report, the tragic incident took place at a building in Rajendra Nagar, which houses a branch of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, a renowned coaching institute for civil service aspirants. The basement library of the institute became flooded following a spell of heavy rain, leading to the untimely deaths of the three aspirants.
The deceased have been identified as Tania Soni, aged 25, Shreya Yadav, also 25, and 28-year-old Navin Delvin. The loss of these young lives has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting calls for accountability and stringent measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The petition filed by Kutumb argues that the deaths could have been avoided if the civic bodies had performed their duties efficiently. It calls for a thorough investigation into the role of the MCD, DDA, and other involved authorities in maintaining the infrastructure and drainage systems in the area. The petitioners stress the need for a transparent and high-level probe to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
“The incident is a consequence of corruption and the failure of the civic authorities in the national capital.”
