The High Court’s order temporarily stays the West Bengal government’s recent OBC (Other Backward Classes) list, which had added 140 sub-categories.
This decision also invalidated the previous list, which included 113 OBC groups.
The newly issued notification expanded the number of sub-groups under the OBC category, prompting a legal challenge. In its ruling, the High Court has suspended all government orders related to the prior list, and the application process for OBC caste certificates is temporarily on hold until the next hearing.

The West Bengal government had introduced the new list with the aim of fostering social justice and enhancing representation for backward communities.
However, the court emphasized that a thorough inquiry and hearing are needed to ensure fairness for all parties and uphold equality in society. In light of the High Court’s decision, the Mamata Banerjee administration has appealed to the Supreme Court to set-aside the ruling.
