The Bombay High Court dismissed a plea seeking to halt the release of the movie “Match Fixing,” which is based on the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The petition argued that the film’s content could potentially affect the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings. However, the court ruled against granting the stay, allowing the film’s release to proceed.
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court rejected two petitions seeking to block the release of the film “Match Fixing – The Nation is At Stake,” which is based on the 2008 Malegaon Blast case and scheduled for release on November 15.
A division bench comprising Justice B.P. Colabawalla and Justice S.G. Sundaresan heard a petition filed by Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, an accused in the case, who argued that the film could impact the ongoing trial. Purohit raised concerns that the movie, given its sensitive subject matter, could influence the judicial process and affect the involved parties.

Another petition claimed the film perpetuates harmful stereotypes against Muslims, depicting them as violent extremists and fostering hatred.
In response, the producers assured the court that a disclaimer stating the movie is a work of fiction would be shown at the start. Purohit’s counsel also sought a delay in the film’s release until after the elections, but the bench noted that the movie was based on a book that had been publicly available for years.
The court questioned how a judge could be influenced by a movie when the book, which could have the same impact, had already been accessible.
The bench ultimately dismissed the petitions, calling them “misconceived.”
