Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court warned that the growing use of mobile phones has reduced meaningful communication among family members, increasing loneliness, mental stress, and tragically contributing to a rise in suicides across society.

Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court remarked that the rise of mobile phones has diminished communication among family members, resulting in increased loneliness and a rise in suicides.

While speaking as the chief guest at a seminar focused on the role of society in suicide prevention, Justice Yadav stated,

“Parents should not burden their children with anything and should not say that you have to become a doctor, you have to become an engineer.”

He emphasized the importance of allowing children to pursue careers aligned with their own interests.

He added,

“Your child may be average, so do not compare him with another child. Thank god that he has given you a child because many people are childless.”

Justice Yadav stressed that children should never feel inferior or weaker than their peers. He warned that if parents undermine their children’s confidence, it could lead to depression and potentially, “take steps towards committing suicide.”

He urged parents to maintain open lines of communication with their children and advised that if a friend exhibits unusual behavior, it should not be ignored.

He cautioned,

“Otherwise, tomorrow you will come to know that he has committed suicide,”

Professor Anupam Agarwal from the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Prayagraj, who was also a special guest at the event, highlighted that students in higher educational institutions are experiencing various stressors, contributing to an increase in suicide incidents.

He noted that a study has indicated that poor mental health, stemming from multiple factors, is leading students to take drastic actions.

Agarwal stated,

“Family problems are a big reason for this,”
