Man Commits Suicide at Amritsar’s Golden Temple With Judge’s Security Officers’ Gun: HC Directed Authorities To Tighten the Security

PUNJAB: The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed Chandigarh authorities today (25th Sept) to enhance the security for a High Court judge following an incident where a person at Amritsar’s Golden Temple snatched the judge’s personal security officer’s (PSO) weapon and subsequently used it to commit suicide.

The Bench, consisting of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal, also directed the Punjab Police to provide a status report on the ongoing investigation related to this incident. This report is to be submitted in a sealed cover.

“This is a serious matter; please ensure the security of the concerned judge is strengthened,” stated Justice Nagu.

The Court also recommended that personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) be assigned to the judge’s security detail.

“The report regarding this should be submitted on the next hearing date,”

it instructed.

The matter is listed on 27 September for further consideration.

According to a report, the firearm used by the unidentified individual for the suicide belonged to an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) who was accompanying a judge visiting the Golden Temple to pay respects.

“The bullets struck his head, and he died on the spot. The police subsequently transported the body to a hospital,” a police officer told the publication.

On Tuesday, the Court took suo motu cognizance of the incident and initiated a Public Interest Litigation. Labeling it a security breach, the Court ordered the Director General of Police, Punjab, to attend via video conferencing.

In compliance with the order, the DGP participated virtually. The Court was informed that a security review meeting was scheduled for Thursday and that efforts were still underway to determine the identity of the suicide victim.
