Anand Venkatesh emphasized the seriousness of ragging. The incident in November 2023 involved physical assault, head-shaving, and confinement over a liquor contribution dispute. The victim forgave the accused during the February 22 court session, leading to the termination of the case.
Coimbatore, Madras: On February 22, the Madras High Court made a decisive move in a case involving seven students from PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore, accused of a severe ragging incident. The court decided to terminate all criminal charges against these students following a reconciliation between them and the victim. This decision came after the court was informed that both parties had reached an amicable settlement.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, presiding over the case, took the opportunity to admonish the accused students, highlighting the grave nature of their actions.
“What is the purpose of going to college if you will indulge in abhorrent acts such as ragging? It is better to remain illiterate and uneducated than indulging in such acts. Ragging is an inhuman thing. If a person is deriving pleasure by subjecting another human being to torture, it means he is suffering from mental illness,”

BACKGROUND
The incident, which unfolded in November 2023, saw the accused students physically assault a junior peer and forcibly shave his head, purportedly after he refused to contribute money for liquor. The victim was then confined in a room overnight, an act that led to the registration of a criminal case by the Coimbatore police.

During the court session on February 22, the victim, accompanied by his father, expressed his decision to forgive the accused and withdraw from pursuing the case further after receiving an apology from them. This act of forgiveness prompted the court to quash the pending criminal proceedings, bringing an end to the legal battle.
