Madras: Justice J Sathya Narayana Prasad, who was serving as a sitting Judge of the Madras High Court, sadly passed away on Tuesday, May 6, at the age of 56. The Madras Bar Association confirmed his demise through a condolence message.

Justice Prasad had reportedly experienced sudden health discomfort at his home. He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Chennai, where he unfortunately passed away due to cardiac arrest.

Born on March 15, 1969, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Justice Prasad belonged to a family deeply rooted in the legal profession. His father, late R Jaiprasad, was a respected District and Sessions Judge, who served in various districts including Madurai, Kanyakumari, and Krishnagiri.

Justice Prasad made a mark in the judiciary with his sharp legal mind and dedication. In October 2022, he was part of a Division Bench along with Justice R Mahadevan (who later became a Supreme Court Judge). This Bench achieved a remarkable feat by disposing of 2,085 cases in just 20 days.

Out of these, the Bench passed orders on nearly 700 writ petitions, about 1,100 miscellaneous cases, and several Public Interest Litigations (PILs). These cases had been pending for many years, and the speedy disposal helped reduce the case backlog significantly.

In April 2024, Justice Prasad also made headlines for his directions to the Tamil Nadu government. He ordered the State to submit a status report on the investigation into alleged misuse of funds meant for housing the poor.

The probe was related to two major schemes:

  1. The Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G)
  2. The Chief Minister Solar Powered Green Housing Scheme run by the State Government.

The sudden demise of Justice Prasad has come as a big shock to the legal community in Tamil Nadu.

The Madras Bar Association expressed its deep sorrow, stating in its official condolence message:
“The Madras Bar Association mourns the untimely demise of Justice J Sathya Narayana Prasad and extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
