Madras High Court Seeks Guidelines to Ensure Customer Safety and Prevent Criminals from Posing as Delivery Agents

Chennai: The Madras High Court has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, the State government, and several private firms, including online aggregators like SwiggyZomato, and Zepto, in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking guidelines to regulate delivery partners and ensure customer safety. Justice P Velmurugan has directed all respondent parties to respond to the notices within four weeks.

The PIL, filed by Nithyanantham, highlights the lack of strict rules governing delivery personnel, including the wearing of proper uniforms and displaying ID cards. This, the petitioner claims, allows miscreants and criminals to pose as delivery partners and commit theft and other offences.

The petitioner cites the recent killing of lawyer and Bahujan Samaj Party Tamil Nadu unit president K Armstrong in Chennai, which was allegedly committed by assailants posing as delivery agents.

The petitioner argues that uniform guidelines are urgently needed to regulate the activities of delivery partners and keep a watch over them. The court’s decision to issue notices to the respondents is a significant step towards addressing this critical issue and ensuring the safety of customers receiving deliveries from online aggregators.
