NEW DELHI: The Central Government, on March 4, approved the appointment of four additional judges of the Madras High Court as permanent judges.
The judges who have been made permanent are:
- Justice Ramasamy Sakthivel;
- Justice P. Dhanabal;
- Justice Chinnasamy Kumarappan; and
- Justice Kandasamy Rajasekar.
Earlier, in February 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended these four judges for permanent positions.
As of March 1, the Madras High Court has a total of 65 judges, while the approved number of judges is 75.
This means there are still 10 vacant positions.
BACKGROUND
The Supreme Court Collegium decided to make four additional judges of the Madras High Court permanent.
This decision was taken during a meeting held on Thursday (Feb 20).

The judges who are recommended for permanent positions are:
- Justice Ramasamy Sakthivel,
- Justice P Dhanabal,
- Justice Chinnasamy Kumarappan, and
- Justice Kandasamy Rajasekar.

A statement issued by the Supreme Court confirmed this decision.
“The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday recommended that four additional judges of the Madras High Court be made permanent.”
This move is important because making judges permanent helps in ensuring stability in the judiciary and improves the efficiency of the court.
The Collegium system plays a key role in appointing and transferring judges in India.
It consists of senior judges, including the Chief Justice of India, who make recommendations for appointments and confirmations in the judiciary.

“The decision in this regard was taken in a Collegium meeting held on Thursday”
