Kerala: A petition has been submitted before the Kerala High Court, accusing members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) of engaging in voter fraud in the Vadakara Parliamentary constituency.
Advocate Praveen Kumar, the Chief Election Agent of Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Shafi Parambil, lodged the petition.
The upcoming Lok Sabha election in the constituency, slated for April 26, is anticipated to be closely contested between Parambil and CPI(M)’s KK Shailaja.
Shailaja, who served as the Health Minister of Kerala during the previous left government, garnered widespread praise for her handling of the Nipah virus outbreak in 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
In his plea, Kumar alleges that CPI(M) cadres consistently cast fraudulent votes in every election within the constituency, using the identities of deceased individuals, those residing abroad, or individuals employed elsewhere. He further asserts that polling and police officers associated with the CPI(M) party contribute to this alleged malpractice.
The petitioner contends that unless the entire polling process is recorded via videography in accordance with circulars issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), fairness cannot be ensured in the impending polls.
Kumar also highlights a recent incident involving the detonation of a country bomb in the area, reportedly carried out by CPI(M) workers according to police reports. This, he argues, raises concerns about potential attacks on voters and members of rival parties during the election.
Consequently, Kumar implores the Court to direct the ECI and the Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala to deploy central forces across the 1,186 polling booths within the Vadakara constituency.
Additionally, he seeks orders to ensure the comprehensive video recording of the entire polling process in these 1,186 booths, without compromising the anonymity of voting.
