The Kuki Students’ Organisation has approached the Delhi High Court, urging the reinstatement of Churachandpur, Manipur, as a designated examination site for SSC exams, not just for this academic year but for the future as well. The plea calls on the court to direct the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) and the Manipur government to ensure that adequate arrangements are made for tribal students residing in the hill districts.

New Delhi: The Kuki Students’ Organisation has taken a significant step by filing a plea in the Delhi High Court, calling for the reinstatement of Churachandpur, Manipur, as an examination venue for the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams.

The organisation seeks this reinstatement not only for the current academic year but also for future examinations. The plea emphasizes the urgent need for directions from the court to both the SSC and the Manipur government, ensuring appropriate arrangements for tribal students residing in the hill districts of Manipur.

In their plea, the Kuki Students’ Organisation highlights the challenges faced by tribal students who are now required to travel to Aizawl, Mizoram, for their exams due to Churachandpur no longer being listed as a venue. Many of these students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and the loss of a nearby examination center threatens their future prospects.

The plea asserts that the SSC’s decision lacks a reasonable basis and contradicts reports from competent government officials, branding the removal of Churachandpur as arbitrary and whimsical, ultimately violating the principles of fairness and reasonableness expected from state institutions.

During the recent Combined Graduate Level Examination (Tier-1) 2024, over 500 candidates from the Kuki community who had chosen Churachandpur as their exam venue faced significant hurdles when reassigned to Aizawl.

The difficulties included navigating challenging hill roads and incurring high travel costs, making it increasingly difficult for students to reach the new exam location. For many from economically weaker sections, securing lodging and basic amenities in Aizawl proved to be a daunting task, leading some to forgo the opportunity to take the exam altogether.

Despite these considerable challenges, the Kuki Students’ Organisation has managed to galvanize community support, helping around 280 candidates travel to Aizawl for their examinations. As the case is set to be heard again on October 16, the Kuki Students’ Organisation remains hopeful for a favorable resolution.

Their plea not only aims to restore Churachandpur as an SSC exam venue but also strives to ensure that future generations of educated tribal youth have equitable access to educational opportunities.
