Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam posed this question to the West Bengal government’s lawyer, who argued that the unnatural death case was filed due to the absence of an immediate murder complaint.

KOLKATA: Today (13th Aug): The Calcutta High Court questioned why a murder case wasn’t initially registered in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, instead of an unnatural death case.
Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam posed this question to the West Bengal government’s lawyer, who argued that the unnatural death case was filed due to the absence of an immediate murder complaint.
The division bench, led by the Chief Justice, noted that the doctor’s body was found within the hospital premises and suggested that the hospital’s superintendent or principal could have filed the complaint.
The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found dead inside the seminar hall of the hospital located in North Kolkata on Friday. Initial autopsy reports have suggested that she was sexually assaulted before her life was tragically taken. This development has fueled demands for justice, leading to multiple petitions being filed in the court.
The body of the postgraduate trainee, who was reportedly raped and murdered in a seminar hall at the hospital, was discovered on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime.

Acknowledging the gruesome nature of the murder, the Chief Justice stated that the doctors and interns were justified in expressing their anger. Junior doctors and interns across West Bengal continued their strike on Tuesday, demanding better protection for hospital staff.
The high court urged the state to engage in dialogue with the protesting doctors. Meanwhile, the state’s lawyer assured the court that the Kolkata Police is conducting a transparent investigation. Following a directive from the bench, the West Bengal Government presented the case diary at 1 pm, after which the court adjourned the hearing until 3 pm.
