BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Monday ordered the release of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi’s brother and nephew, who were taken into custody following their arrest in a high-profile cheating case. The duo, accused of allegedly offering an election ticket in exchange for a substantial sum, had been detained for
“Allegedly promising an election ticket to certain persons in exchange for Rs 2.5 crores.”
Justice M. Nagaprasanna, presiding over the case, noted that the accused have acknowledged receiving the funds but have since “undertaken to return the entire amount.” This acknowledgment was pivotal in the proceedings, as the Court reviewed the petition seeking to dismiss the First Information Report (FIR) against the accused, Gopal Joshi and Ajay Joshi, the Union Minister’s brother and nephew, respectively.
The legal issue emerged following a complaint lodged by Sunitha Chavan, spouse of former JD(S) MLA Devanand Chavan, with Basaveshwara Nagar police in Bengaluru.
She claimed that Gopal Joshi had deceived her by promising her husband a BJP ticket for the Bijapur Lok Sabha constituency in the forthcoming 2024 elections, in return for a significant sum of “Rs 2.5 crore.”
According to the complaint, Joshi had assured them of a favorable position in exchange for this financial commitment, but the promised ticket never materialized.
The Joshi duo was subsequently arrested and placed under police custody last week by order of a Bengaluru court. However, following Monday’s court decision, they have been granted release, with the condition that the funds be returned to the complainants.
This case underscores the Karnataka High Court’s ongoing commitment to addressing allegations of political misconduct, ensuring that claims of fraud, especially within electoral contexts, receive due judicial attention.
