Justice Gowda, formerly of the Karnataka High Court, takes oath in Gujarat. The transfer is part of SC’s push for diversity in judiciary.

Ahmedabad: Today, on June 09, Justice Neranahalli Srinivasan Sanjay Gowda, who earlier served as a judge at the Karnataka High Court, officially took oath as a judge of the Gujarat High Court on Monday.
The oath-taking ceremony took place in the First Court of the Gujarat High Court, where Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, Justice Sunita Agarwal, administered the oath of office to Justice Gowda.

The ceremony was attended by several senior legal dignitaries, including Advocate General Kamal Trivedi, senior advocates, and other esteemed guests from the legal fraternity.
Justice Sanjay Gowda is 58 years old and has been a part of the Indian legal system for many years. He began his legal career in 1989 when he started practicing as an advocate.
After nearly three decades of service as a lawyer, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in November 2019.
Two years later, in September 2021, he was confirmed as a permanent judge of the Karnataka High Court.
In April 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, made a recommendation to transfer seven sitting judges of various High Courts across the country.
This included four judges from the Karnataka High Court, and among them was Justice Gowda. As per the statement released by the Supreme Court Collegium, the recommendation for transfers was made
“with a view to infuse inclusivity and diversity at the level of High Courts and to strengthen the quality of administration of justice”.
Justice Gowda’s transfer is a part of this wider decision taken by the apex court to promote broader representation and improve the efficiency of the judiciary in different states.
His shift from Karnataka to Gujarat is expected to bring a new perspective and contribute to the strengthening of judicial work at the Gujarat High Court.
The entire legal community in Gujarat warmly welcomed Justice Gowda as he begins a new chapter of his judicial journey in the state.
His vast experience and dedication to the legal profession are anticipated to benefit the High Court in delivering fair and efficient justice to the people.
