Jama Masjid Whitewashing Begins in Sambhal After High Court Nod – Security Tightened

SAMBHAL: The work of whitewashing the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has started after getting permission from the Allahabad High Court on March 12.

The contractor appointed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for this work said that the whitewashing will be completed in a week and a total of eight workers are involved in the task.

“A total of eight people are at work. The work of whitewashing has been started… We will finish the work within a week. We have been only directed to whitewash the mosque. We have been assigned by the ASI,”

-he said.

The Allahabad High Court, while hearing the case on March 12, allowed the mosque’s outer walls to be whitewashed and decorated with lights.

However, it strictly instructed that nothing else should be changed or altered.

The next hearing of this case is scheduled for April 8.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in the area around Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal. This step was taken after the High Court directed a three-member committee to supervise the painting work of the mosque, especially ahead of Ramzan.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal ordered the formation of a special panel, which includes an ASI official, a scientific expert, and a local administration representative. Their duty is to ensure that the whitewashing work is done properly and without any damage to the mosque’s structure.

Sambhal ASP Shrish Chandra assured that strict security measures have been implemented to maintain peace.

“Tight security arrangements have been made around the disputed site. An adequate police force has been deployed… Peace will be maintained… Surveillance is being conducted through CCTV and drones,”

-he said.

This step was taken after the violence that occurred in Sambhal on November 24, during an ASI examination of the Mughal-era mosque. Following the violent incident, the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed a chargesheet in February.

The chargesheet, which is over 4,000 pages long, was filed for six out of the twelve cases related to the November 24 violence. The violent clashes led to the deaths of four people and left many others injured, including officials and local residents.

As per the chargesheet, police have arrested 80 people so far, while 79 are still absconding.

The total number of accused in this case is 159.

The chargesheet further revealed that weapons recovered from the violence site and other areas were originally manufactured in countries like the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, and Czechoslovakia.
