The Delhi High Court will now function on the first and third Saturday of every month following a Full Court decision. The move aims to reduce pending cases, despite earlier objections from the Bar over workload and work–life balance.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has officially announced that the first and third Saturday of every month will now be regular working days for the court. This is a major change from the earlier system, where Saturdays were mostly treated as court holidays, except in rare or urgent situations.
The decision was taken by the Full Court of the Delhi High Court during its meeting held on December 22, 2025. The notification informing about this change was issued today, making the new system officially applicable.
This move is not entirely new, as it is an extension of the earlier “2025 arrangement”, under which the High Court had directed that each Bench should sit on one Saturday every month.
That step was taken to speed up the hearing and disposal of long-pending cases. By now formally fixing the first and third Saturday as working days, the court aims to bring uniformity and consistency in Saturday sittings across all Benches.

However, this decision has not been without opposition. The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) had earlier strongly objected to the Saturday working policy. The Bar Association had pointed out that lawyers were not consulted before the arrangement was introduced.
The DHCBA had argued that compulsory Saturday sittings affected the “work–life balance” of lawyers and also caused practical and logistical problems for members of the Bar.

In view of these concerns, the Bar Association had requested the High Court to either put the Saturday working system on hold or clearly define “single fixed working Saturday for all Benches” so that lawyers could plan their professional and personal schedules better.
With this latest notification, the Delhi High Court has now formally institutionalised Saturday sittings on two fixed days every month, signalling a clear push towards faster case disposal, even as concerns from the Bar continue to remain part of the larger discussion.
