Delhi High Court bars Delhi University candidates and student groups from holding victory processions after DUSU results. Bench warns of halting office bearers’ functioning if elections are not conducted in a satisfactory order.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, issued strict directions barring candidates and student organisations of Delhi University from organising any victory processions in the national capital following the announcement of results for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections scheduled on September 19.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela clarified that the court was not interfering with the elections themselves.

However, the judges cautioned that if the polls are not conducted in a “satisfactory order,” it may take strict measures, including stopping the functioning of the office bearers of the Delhi University Students’ Union.
The bench observed,
“Not interfering with election, but if polls don’t take place in satisfactory order, We may stop functioning of office bearers.”
The court emphasised the responsibility of authorities in maintaining law and order during the upcoming DUSU elections. It directed the Delhi Police, Delhi University officials, and the civil administration to take all necessary and permissible steps to prevent any untoward incidents during the polls.
The bench underlined the importance of ensuring that no violation of election regulations occurs during this period.
The High Court’s order comes amid concerns over maintaining peace and discipline in the university campus during the politically sensitive DUSU polls.
By prohibiting victory marches and issuing clear instructions to authorities, the court aims to prevent clashes and maintain a safe environment for students.
This move by the Delhi High Court reinforces the need for orderly conduct in student elections, ensuring that celebrations do not escalate into disruptive incidents.
The strict caution about halting the functioning of the office bearers if elections are not held properly signals the judiciary’s commitment to upholding democratic and peaceful processes in educational institutions.
