A bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela instructed the vice-chancellor to make a decision on the petitioner’s October 2023 request in line with the law, ideally within three weeks.

NEW DELHI: On Wednesday (11th Sept), the Delhi High Court directed the vice-chancellor of Delhi University to address a representation requesting women’s reservation in the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.

A bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela instructed the vice-chancellor to make a decision on the petitioner’s October 2023 request in line with the law, ideally within three weeks.

The court issued this order while disposing of a petition that sought 50% reservation for women in the DUSU elections.

Petitioner Shabana Hussain, represented by advocate Ashu Bidhuri, argued that the elections were dominated by money and power, limiting women’s participation. Due to these concerns, she approached the court to mandate women’s representation through reservations in the elections scheduled for September 27, with nominations starting on September 17.

Hussain emphasized the importance of gender equality in student elections and urged the university to follow the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.

The committee, formed by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on the Supreme Court’s orders, was led by former chief election commissioner J M Lyngdoh and submitted its report on May 26, 2006.
