Today, On 24th April, The Madras High Court reversed the discharge of Tamil Nadu Minister Duraimurugan in a disproportionate assets case. It ordered a special court to frame charges against him and his wife.

The Madras High Court set-aside a local court’s decision to discharge senior DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister Duraimurugan in a disproportionate wealth case, instructing a special court to frame charges against him and his wife.
This marked the second instance in two days where the High Court issued a similar directive regarding Duraimurugan.
Justice P. Velmurugan, On Wednesday, ordered a special court in Vellore district to frame charges in accordance with the law against the DMK General Secretary and his family in a separate disproportionate wealth case covering the period from 1996 to 2001.
On Thursday, Justice Velmurugan instructed the special court in Vellore to frame charges against Duraimurugan and his wife in a case involving the accumulation of Rs.1.40 crore, which was disproportionate to their known sources of income during the period from 2007 to 2009.
At that time, Duraimurugan held the Public Works Department portfolio in the DMK government from 2006 to 2011.
The case was initiated in 2011 by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), and the couple was discharged by a special court in Vellore in 2017. DVAC subsequently challenged this decision before the High Court.
The judge directed the special court to resolve the case within six months, mandating that the trial be conducted on a day-to-day basis.
The disproportionate assets (DA) case involving Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan began in 2002.
It was initiated by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), which accused him of accumulating wealth beyond his known sources of income while serving as the Minister for Public Works and Water Resources between 1996 and 2001.
According to DVAC, the excess assets were valued at around Rs.3.92 crore.
