Dhanush vs Nayanthara: Madras High Court Rejects Netflix Petition Against Copyright Suit

Chennai: The Madras High Court dismissed Netflix India’s petition to reject a copyright lawsuit filed by actor Dhanush against actress Nayanthara. The case revolves around the use of a 3-second film clip, produced by Dhanush, in Nayanthara’s documentary without his permission.

Dhanush filed the case against Nayanthara, her husband Vignesh Shivan, and their production company, Rowdy Pictures Private Limited, in November last year. His legal complaint claimed that visuals from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan were included in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale without obtaining proper authorization.

Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, also submitted an application to the court, seeking permission to initiate legal proceedings in Tamil Nadu against Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, a Mumbai-based entity representing Netflix’s content investments in India.

Dhanush issued a stern warning before taking legal action, asking the makers to remove the disputed content within 24 hours. A statement from Dhanush’s legal team said,

“Advice your client to take down the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film NAANUM ROWDY DHAAN by using the same in your client’s documentary named NAYANTHARA BEYOND THE FAIRYTALE within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs. 10 crores against your client and Netflix India.”

Nayanthara responded strongly by sharing an open letter on Instagram, where she criticized Dhanush’s legal demand for Rs. 10 crore in compensation.

She accused him of reaching an all-time low with his actions. Furthermore, Nayanthara publicly expressed her gratitude to Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan, and other producers who allowed her to use clips from their films for her documentary.

She wrote-

“Thanking Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan and other producers who allowed me to use footage from their films for my documentary and granted their all-clears without any hesitation and delay.”

This legal battle has drawn significant attention as it highlights the complexities of intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry.
