Delhi LG Increases Income Limit For EWS Admission In Private Schools To Rs 5 Lakh After HC Ruling

NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena approved raising the annual income limit for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. This step ensures that children whose parents earn up to Rs 5 lakh annually can now be admitted under the EWS category in private schools.

The announcement was made via a notification issued by Raj Niwas on Monday. This move aligns with a Delhi High Court ruling on December 5, 2023, where the court directed the Delhi government to increase the income threshold from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for EWS category admissions.

The notification stated,

“However, the Delhi government through the chief minister had submitted a file with a proposal to enhance the limit to only Rs 2.5 lakh in October end. The LG while approving the proposal of the limit of Rs 2.5 lakh, had strongly advised the CM to revisit this threshold limit and raise it to at least Rs 5 lakh.”

Following the High Court’s observations, it was noted that earlier orders to raise the income limit had not been implemented.

The notification added,

“Thereafter, the High Court in an order dated November 13, observed that its earlier orders had remained disobeyed.”

This prompted the Delhi government to reconsider and revise the proposed income limit. On Monday, the updated proposal to raise the threshold to Rs 5 lakh was finally sent to the LG, who approved the revision.

Private schools in Delhi are mandated to reserve 25% of their seats for students belonging to the EWS, Disadvantaged Groups (DG), and children with disabilities.

With the revised income cap, a larger number of families will qualify for admissions under the EWS category.

Separate admission lists for these categories will be released following the updated guidelines.

This change is expected to benefit many families, providing more children with access to quality education in private schools.
