The Delhi High Court temporarily removed the mandatory black gown for advocates from March 17, 2025, until further notice, ensuring more comfort while practicing in court.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court announced an important change for advocates practicing in the court. As per Notice No. 543/G-11/Genl-II/DHC/2025, dated 20th February 2025, the requirement to wear a ‘Gown’ has been temporarily removed starting 17th March 2025 (Monday).
This change will stay in effect until further orders.
This notice supersedes the previous notification, which was Notice No. 2533/G-11/Genl-II/DHC/2024, dated 21st October 2024.
The notification has been issued by Kanwal Jeet Arora, Registrar General, Delhi High Court.
Copies of the notice have been sent to relevant authorities, including:
- The Registrar-cum-Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Justice
- The Joint Registrar-cum PA to the Registrar General
- The Joint Registrar (Listing), with instructions to publish it on the first page of the daily Cause List for three consecutive days
- Private Secretaries to the Hon’ble Chief Justice and Hon’ble Judges, so they can inform the concerned judges.
- The Joint Director (Tech.), who has been requested to upload the notice on the official website and intranet of the Delhi High Court.
- The President/Honorary Secretary of the Delhi High Court Bar Association, New Delhi
- Notice Boards for public display
The Deputy Registrar (General Administration-II) has signed and forwarded this notification.
This move will impact all lawyers practicing in the Delhi High Court, who will now be exempted from wearing the traditional black gown from 17th March 2025 onwards, unless further instructions are issued.
