The Allahabad High Court has adjourned the hearing on former Sambhal CO Anuj Chaudhary’s challenge to an FIR order linked to the 2024 Sambhal violence till February 9. The Court directed that the State government’s petition against the same magistrate’s order be heard together with Chaudhary’s plea.

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday postponed the hearing in a case related to the 2024 Sambhal violence and fixed the next date for February 9.
The case has been filed by Anuj Chaudhary, the former Circle Officer (CO) of Sambhal. He has challenged an order passed by a Chief Judicial Magistrate directing the registration of an FIR against him and several other police officials.

The matter was heard by Justice Samit Gopal. During the hearing, Additional Advocate General Manish Goel, appearing for the State of Uttar Pradesh, informed the Court that the state government has also filed a separate petition challenging the same magistrate’s order.
After hearing the submissions, the High Court directed that both petitions — one filed by Anuj Chaudhary and the other by the State government — should be clubbed together and heard jointly, as they challenge the same order.
The Court also granted time to the counsel representing the complainant, Yameen, to prepare arguments in the case, as requested. Following this, the hearing was adjourned to a later date.
The dispute arises from an order dated January 9, 2026, passed by Vibhanshu Sudhir, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Sambhal. The magistrate had directed the police to register an FIR against several police officers, including Anuj Chaudhary.
The magistrate’s order was based on a criminal complaint filed by Yameen, a resident of Khaggu Sarai locality in Nakhasa, Sambhal. In his complaint, Yameen alleged that on November 24, 2024, his 24-year-old son Alam was shot by police personnel during a law and order operation.
According to the complaint, Alam had gone out to sell papad when the incident took place near the Shahi Jama Masjid area in Sambhal. Yameen claimed that his son was fired upon by police during the police action in the area.
Following the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s direction to register an FIR, both the named police officer and the Uttar Pradesh government approached the High Court, questioning the legality and correctness of the order.
The Allahabad High Court will now examine both challenges together when the matter is taken up on the next date of hearing.
