Calcutta High Court allows WB teacher recruitment to proceed, rejecting pleas against 2025 eligibility norms. Court backs “modern-day requirements” in selection process.

Kolkata: Today, on July 14, the Calcutta High Court has allowed the West Bengal government and the Central School Service Commission (SSC) to go ahead with the teacher recruitment process for state-run and aided schools.
This came after a division bench of the court, led by Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das De, dismissed four appeals filed by candidates who had challenged some parts of the new recruitment rules framed in 2025.

The candidates had earlier approached a single bench of the High Court, questioning certain provisions of the 2025 recruitment rules.
Specifically, they raised concerns about the fixation of minimum marks at the graduation and post-graduation level to determine eligibility for appearing in the teacher selection process.
They also objected to changes made in the pattern of marks allotment. However, the single bench had not accepted their challenge.
Unhappy with the decision, the candidates moved the division bench. The court reserved its judgment on Monday, July 10, after hearing all the arguments.
On Wednesday, the bench delivered its verdict, upholding the single bench’s decision and rejecting the appeals made by the candidates.
This judgment is significant as it clears the way for the ongoing selection process for teachers in government-aided and sponsored schools.
The decision ensures that the teacher recruitment process, which had faced legal hurdles, can now move forward without further delays.
During the hearing, Advocate General Kishore Dutta, representing the West Bengal government, defended the changes made in the recruitment process.
He said,
“The notification for the recruitment of teachers was as per the modern-day requirement and the benefit of students.”
He further clarified that
“the notification published on May 30 for the recruitment of teachers for West Bengal government-sponsored and -aided schools was in accordance with law.”
As per the directions given by the division bench earlier, the state government, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, and the SSC submitted relevant documents before the court on Monday.
These included affidavits that had been filed in the Supreme Court in connection with the school jobs case — a case in which around 26,000 teacher appointments were canceled due to allegations of corruption and irregularities in the earlier recruitment process.
By dismissing the appeals, the Calcutta High Court has given a green signal to the authorities to resume the recruitment process in a fair and transparent manner, under the updated rules of 2025.
The decision brings a sense of clarity and progress to the state’s education system, which had been under scrutiny following the massive school jobs scam that led to the cancellation of thousands of jobs earlier.
The judgment reinforces the legal standing of the new recruitment norms and allows the School Service Commission to conduct the selection process in alignment with present-day educational needs and standards.
