Lawyers of Calcutta High Court and CAT will abstain from court on August 22 after advocate Manujendra Narayan Roy was allegedly assaulted by police. Bar associations demand strict action against the accused officers.

Kolkata: On August 21, Lawyers of the Calcutta High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal’s Kolkata Bench (CAT) have decided that they will not attend court hearings on August 22, 2025. This step has been taken as a protest after an alleged incident where a lawyer was attacked by police officials of Bidhan Nagar East police station.

According to both bar associations, advocate Manujendra Narayan Roy was badly beaten on the night of August 20. Because of this alleged assault, he suffered a pelvic bone fracture. In his complaint to the High Court Bar Association, Roy said that the police officers “deliberately and brutally assaulted him.”

The Calcutta High Court Bar Association passed a resolution in this matter. In its statement, it said,

“The members of the Bar Association, High Court, Calcutta shall not participate in any judicial proceedings in any mode or manner before this Hon’ble Court … until proper and satisfactory punitive action is taken against the erring police personnel.”

The Association also mentioned that it will wait till August 25 to review the situation after knowing what action has been taken against the accused police officials.

At the same time, the Bar Association of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) also condemned the violence. In its statement, it said that the act by the authorities is misuse of power. According to the association,

“the violence by authorities is not justice but an abuse of power.”

The CAT Bar Association further added,

“In such circumstances, we have decided to abstain ourself from participating in any Judicial Process tomorrow i.e. on 22.08.2025 from 11 A.M. onwards as a mark of protest against such brutal and barbaric attack by the Police Authority.”

This coordinated boycott by lawyers at both the Calcutta High Court and CAT is aimed at demanding accountability and strict action against the police officers accused of attacking the advocate.
