Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has urged the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite its inquiry into the tragic passing of IIT Kharagpur student, Faizan Ahmed. Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, following the discovery of Faizan’s decomposed body in an IIT hostel room in October 2022, the SIT has been entrusted with the task of uncovering the truth behind his demise, as per the second post-mortem report.

During a recent hearing, Justice Jay Sengupta emphasized the need for a prompt conclusion to the investigation, setting a deadline for the SIT to submit its findings by March 18. Furthermore, Justice Sengupta stressed that the SIT should refrain from finalizing its report without the court’s explicit consent.

Faizan’s parents, residing in Dibrugarh, Assam, remain in the dark regarding the circumstances of their son’s death. They suspect foul play, alleging that Faizan, a third-year undergraduate student at the time of his death, may have been the victim of senior students’ aggression due to his resistance to ragging.

Niladri Sekhar Ghosh, representing the family, highlighted during Tuesday’s court session that the second post-mortem, conducted in May of the preceding year, suspected the possibility of homicide. Ghosh urged the SIT to factor this revelation into its progress report.

Acknowledging the complexity of the investigation, a member of the SIT informed the press that various agencies’ involvement necessitated additional time for the probe’s completion. However, the team assures compliance with the court’s directives, committing to submit its report on the specified date.

The initial post-mortem, was not substantial, conducted at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital in October 2022. Following Justice Mantha’s directive, the second post-mortem took place in Kolkata after Faizan’s remains were exhumed from a burial site in Dibrugarh.

Additionally, a legal representative for the state government informed the court that the report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Hyderabad regarding Faizan’s mobile phone analysis could not be available until March.

Faizan’s parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the initial investigations conducted by local authorities and the IIT administration, advocating for a fresh inquiry into their son’s demise. The court’s intervention underscores the importance of a thorough and expeditious investigation to bring clarity and closure to this tragic incident.
