The Calcutta High Court has reserved judgment on Kuntal Ghosh’s bail plea, an accused in the 2014 teacher recruitment scam, after hearing arguments from both sides. Ghosh’s lawyers claimed his lengthy detention lacks trial certainty, while the Enforcement Directorate contended he is a key player in the scam. The case has significant implications for West Bengal’s education sector integrity.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has reserved its judgment on the bail plea of Kuntal Ghosh, an accused in the teacher recruitment scam, following the conclusion of arguments by both parties on Wednesday. Justice Suvra Ghosh reserved the decision after hearing submissions from Ghosh’s legal team and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Kuntal Ghosh, a youth leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was arrested by the ED in January 2023 as part of an investigation into the money trail involved in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) recruitment scam of 2014. The case has garnered widespread attention due to its alleged connections to high-profile figures and accusations of corruption in the education sector.

Arguing for bail, Ghosh’s lawyers emphasized that he has been in custody for nearly one year and nine months. They also pointed out that there is currently no certainty on when the trial will commence, causing prolonged detention without progress on his case.
On the opposing side, ED counsel Phiroze Edulji strongly opposed the bail request, asserting that Ghosh was among the key masterminds behind the recruitment scam. The ED has already arrested several individuals in relation to the scandal, including former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee.
The teacher recruitment scam involves allegations of significant corruption in the recruitment of teachers through the TET of 2014, leading to multiple arrests and ongoing investigations by the ED.
The reserved judgment on Ghosh’s bail plea remains awaited as the court weighs the arguments, with attention focused on the broader implications for accountability and integrity in West Bengal’s education system.
