BJP spokesperson Sanju Verma and former IPS officer Yashovardhan Jha Azad told the Delhi High Court they will archive social media posts made against each other. The Court recorded their undertakings and listed the defamation case for further hearing on May 7.

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Tuesday recorded that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sanju Verma and retired IPS officer Yashovardhan Jha Azad have agreed to archive their social media posts made against each other in a defamation dispute pending before the Court.

Justice Mini Pushkarna also noted Azad’s statement that he would not post anything against Verma on social media in the future, provided she also refrains from making any such posts against him.

“Plaintiff [Azad] submits that if no tweet is made by the defendant [Verma], the plaintiff will not make any tweet on the social media platform against her,”

the Court recorded in its order.

The Court further made it clear that both Sanju Verma and Yashovardhan Jha Azad would be strictly bound by the undertakings given to the Court.

These statements were made during the hearing of a defamation suit filed by Azad against Verma. Azad is a retired Indian Police Service officer who earlier served as Special Director in India’s Intelligence Bureau and later as a Central Information Commissioner.

The dispute between the two traces back to June and July 2025. During that period, Sanju Verma participated in a televised debate on India Today concerning the Kolkata rape case. During the debate, she questioned Azad’s comments and alleged that he failed to name West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while discussing the incident.

Verma further suggested that Azad avoided naming the Chief Minister because he is the brother of Kirti Azad, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Following the debate, Verma shared the video clip on Twitter (now X). This led to a series of exchanges between the two on the social media platform. In one of her replies, Verma made a remark questioning Azad’s service record and stated,

“Absolutely…what a blot this man must have been on the uniform.”

During the previous hearing held on December 17, 2025, the Delhi High Court had expressed strong disapproval of this post and urged Verma to withdraw the remark.

On Tuesday, advocate Rishav Ranjan, appearing on behalf of Azad, informed the Court that despite the earlier observations, Verma continued to make comments after the last hearing. He submitted that Azad was seeking a direction from the Court to compel Verma to archive her social media post and to restrain her from making any such posts in the future.

On the other hand, advocate Raghav Awasthi, appearing for Sanju Verma, informed the Court that an application had already been filed on her behalf seeking rejection of the defamation suit filed by Azad.

After hearing arguments from both sides for some time, the Court recorded that the parties were willing to resolve the immediate issue relating to social media posts without the Court going into the merits of whether the tweets were defamatory.

“After some hearing, without going into the merits with respect to the defamatory nature of the tweets, both parties are ad idem that they will archive the tweets referring to each other. Let the needful be done in a week from today,”

the Court said in its order.

Justice Pushkarna also issued notice to Yashovardhan Jha Azad on the application filed by Sanju Verma seeking rejection of the defamation suit.

The matter is now listed for further hearing on May 7.
