Verma, who represents the Laxmi Nagar Assembly Constituency, highlighted that former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had announced the installation of 1,40,000 CCTV cameras across Delhi.

Delhi : Today (24th Aug): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Abhay Verma has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government of discriminatory practices in the installation of CCTV cameras. He alleges that the government is prioritizing areas represented by AAP MLAs and councilors, while neglecting those under BJP’s jurisdiction.
The case is set to be heard by a bench led by the Acting Chief Justice on August 27.
Verma, who represents the Laxmi Nagar Assembly Constituency, highlighted that former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had announced the installation of 1,40,000 CCTV cameras across Delhi.
However, after an AAP councilor requested 1,000 cameras, the approval was granted swiftly, while Verma’s similar requests for other wards went unheeded. A survey conducted by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) had identified a need for 2,066 cameras in Laxmi Nagar.
Through his lawyer Satya Ranjan Swain, Verma alleged that despite multiple appeals to the Chief Secretary of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), the demand for additional cameras in Laxmi Nagar remains unmet.
Verma argues that this unequal installation is affecting law and order and jeopardizing safety in his constituency. He is seeking a court directive for the installation of CCTV cameras in Laxmi Nagar’s remaining wards to ensure fairness and improve security.

The petition also criticizes the current approval process, which allows a minister to selectively greenlight projects after they have been passed by the Assembly and discussed with the Cabinet Minister.
Verma contends that this system undermines the authority of the Assembly and grants ministers excessive discretion, which often disadvantages opposition constituencies and hinders their development.
