Allahabad HC Defers Plea Against Bankey Bihari Mandir Ordinance: Petition Challenges Government Takeover in Mathura

UTTAR PRADESH: The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on a plea challenging the validity of an ordinance concerning the administration of the Shri Bankey Bihari Mandir in Mathura.

The petition specifically questions the legality of the Uttar Pradesh Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025, which aims to create a government trust for the control and supervision of the famous temple.

During the hearing, the state government objected, explaining that the ordinance had been passed by the state legislature and was awaiting the Governor’s assent. Consequently, the state argued that the current petition should either be amended or a fresh petition should be filed to address the procedural status of the ordinance.

Responding to this objection, a division bench comprising Justice Arindam Sinha and Justice Avanish Saxena decided to adjourn the matter, giving the petitioner time to move an appropriate plea.

The petition was filed on behalf of “Shri Bankey Bihari Ji” and two others, highlighting concerns about government interference in the temple’s administration.

This case has drawn attention as it touches upon the delicate issue of government control over religious institutions, a topic that has seen legal scrutiny across India in recent years. Devotees and legal observers alike are now waiting to see how the Allahabad High Court addresses the constitutional and procedural questions surrounding this ordinance.

Case Title:
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE OF THAKUR SHREE BANKEY BIHARI JI MAHARAJ TEMPLE AND ANR. V STATE OF UTTAR PRADESH AND ORS.
