The Gujarat High Court has granted rape convict Narayan Sai a five-day temporary bail to visit his ailing mother in Ahmedabad. The court ordered strict police surveillance and barred him from meeting followers.

The Gujarat High Court has given a short-term relief to rape convict Narayan Sai, the son of jailed self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. On Thursday, the court allowed him temporary bail for five days so that he can meet his ailing mother in Ahmedabad.
Narayan Sai had requested this relief saying that his mother is suffering from a serious heart ailment and is in a critical condition. He also pointed out that the last time he had met her was in February 2021, more than three years ago.

However, the state government as well as the lawyer of the victim opposed the plea. They argued that there was no medical evidence placed before the court to prove that his mother’s health was critical.
After hearing both sides, Justice Ilesh Vora of the Gujarat High Court passed the order. The judge considered not only the submissions made but also the “period of Sai’s incarceration” while granting this limited relief.
According to the order, Narayan Sai, who is currently lodged in Lajpore Central Jail in Surat, will be released on bail for five days and will remain under strict police watch during this period.

The order clearly stated:
“The authority concerned is directed to release the applicant on temporary bail for five days with police Japta to meet his ailing mother residing at Ahmedabad at the address mentioned in the case records. He shall not be permitted to reside at or visit any other place.”
The High Court further made it clear that during this temporary release, Sai cannot interact with his supporters or his father’s supporters in large groups.
The order said:
“The convict shall not meet his followers or followers of his father in a group.”
Once the five-day period of temporary bail is over, Narayan Sai will be taken back to Lajpore Jail by the police, as directed by the court.
With this order, the Gujarat High Court has tried to balance Sai’s request to see his ailing mother with the concerns raised by the state and the victim’s side, while also putting strict conditions on his movement and interactions.
