Gujarat High Court extended the interim medical bail of rape convict Asaram Bapu till August 21, noting “his condition is critical” as he remains in ICU at Jupiter Hospital following serious health complications, including elevated troponin levels.

The Gujarat High Court extended the interim medical bail granted to self-styled Godman and rape convict Asaram Bapu until August 21.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Ilesh J. Vora and P.M. Raval observed that Asaram is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and in critical condition.

The Court stated,

“The applicant presently is in ICU with Jupiter Hospital at Indore and as per the records, he diagnosed with very high troponin level (2465.59 pg – ml) and according to treating doctor, his condition is critical. In such circumstances, pending this application, the temporary bail granted earlier is extended till 21.08.2025 on the same terms and conditions,”

It is noteworthy that during the previous hearing, the High Court indicated that his bail on medical grounds would not be extended further.

However, Asaram approached the Supreme Court, which permitted him to seek relief from the High Court.

This marks the third occasion on which Asaram has been granted interim bail.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Gandhinagar court for a rape case. The court found Asaram guilty in a case filed in 2013 for repeatedly raping a female disciple from Surat between 2001 and 2006 while she was residing at his ashram in Motera.

Asaram is also serving a life sentence in another case involving the rape of a minor girl in Rajasthan in 2013.

Senior Advocate Shalin Mehta, along with advocates Ashish Dagli and Hardik Dave, represented Asaram, while Senior Advocate Bharat Naik and advocate Ekant Ahuja appeared for the private respondent.

Asaram, convicted in 2018 for the 2013 rape, has faced numerous legal and medical challenges. His case has gathered substantial media coverage as he continues to assert his innocence, claiming the allegations are fabricated.

In March last year, the Supreme Court rejected Asaram’s plea challenging the Rajasthan High Court’s order upholding his conviction in another rape case.

Later, he requested the Rajasthan High Court, which allowed him to receive Ayurvedic treatment at the ‘Arogayadham Center’ in Jodhpur under police custody in March 2024. He was then given parole for 15 days on December 18, along with 2 extra days for travel to receive treatment.
