Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia, a renowned arbitration law expert, Today (Feb 14) sworn in as a judge of the Delhi High Court, increasing the total strength to 39 judges. Formerly a Partner and Head of Arbitration at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Karia’s expertise in international and domestic commercial disputes will strengthen the court’s arbitration handling. His appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, which praised him as a “domain expert in arbitration law”, making him a valuable addition to the bench.

NEW DELHI: Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia, an expert in arbitration law, officially became a judge of the Delhi High Court on Friday. With his appointment, the total number of judges in the court has increased to 39.
The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Delhi High Court premises, where Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya administered the oath, formally marking Karia’s new role as a judge.
The Central government issued the official notification regarding Karia’s appointment on February 12, based on the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium in August last year. Before becoming a judge, Karia was a Partner and Head of Arbitration at the prestigious law firm Shardul Amarchand & Mangaldas. He has now joined the Delhi High Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 60 judges.
According to the official statement,
“The President has appointed Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia to be a Judge of the Delhi High Court under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India.”
Before his elevation, Karia was a Partner with the Dispute Resolution Practice at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and led the firm’s Arbitration Practice.
His name for elevation was recommended by both the High Court and Supreme Court Collegium, first on October 25, 2023, and later on August 29, 2024.
Recognizing his vast expertise, the Supreme Court Collegium emphasized that-
“Advocate Karia is a domain expert in the law of arbitration.”
The statement further highlighted that-
“The volume of cases on arbitration law requires specialized handling, particularly, in the High Court of Delhi. Shri Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia will prove to be a value addition to the Bench of the High Court of Delhi.”
Karia has deep knowledge and experience in handling international and domestic commercial arbitrations, corporate and securities litigations, general corporate advisory matters, and legal aspects related to information technology, including data privacy and confidentiality.
He has successfully dealt with a wide range of complex, high-value disputes at both national and international levels. His clientele spans across various industries, including oil and gas, real estate, construction, and private equity.
Over the years, Karia has represented clients in arbitrations before leading international and domestic arbitration institutions, such as LCIA (London Court of International Arbitration), ICC (International Chamber of Commerce), ICADR (International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution), ICA (Indian Council of Arbitration), and SIAC (Singapore International Arbitration Centre).
Additionally, he has appeared before the Supreme Court of India and multiple High Courts across the country.
