NEW DELHI: Arjun Ram Meghwal, a prominent BJP leader, has been reappointed to continue his tenure as the Minister of State with independent charge in the Ministry of Law and Justice under the recently inaugurated National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. This decision was officially conveyed through a communication issued by the President of India on Monday(10th June).

Having held the same position in the previous NDA administration, Meghwal’s consistent role in the ministry reflects a significant level of trust and continuity in his capabilities. His responsibilities were initially expanded last year on May 18, when President Draupadi Murmu appointed him to manage the Ministry of Law and Justice independently. Additionally, he was tasked with overseeing the Ministry of State for Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of State for Culture.

On June 9, amidst the ceremonies marking the formation of the new government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Meghwal took the oath of office, reinforcing his role in the central governance structure. His reappointment is seen as a strategic move, considering his experience and previous contributions to the ministry.

Previously, the portfolio had seen a shift when Kiren Rijiju, the then Union Law Minister, transitioned to handle the Ministry of Earth & Sciences. This move had initially paved the way for Meghwal to assume his role with independent charge.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, aged 69, boasts a distinguished career that reflects his versatility and commitment to public service. Having first made his mark as a dedicated Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer, Meghwal’s journey saw him rise to the role of District Magistrate (Collector) in Rajasthan, showcasing his capability in governance and administration.

Born and raised in Rajasthan, Meghwal’s early career in the IAS laid the groundwork for his later political achievements. His tenure as a civil servant is fondly remembered for his hands-on approach and his dedication to the socio-economic development of the districts he managed.

Transitioning from civil service to politics, Meghwal became an integral member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he has been a stalwart for over ten years. His political journey took a significant turn in 2009 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) from Bikaner. His commitment and work ethic led to his reelection in the 2014 general elections, further solidifying his influence within the party and his constituency.

During Narendra Modi’s first term as Prime Minister, Meghwal served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resource, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation. His tenure in these roles was marked by proactive governance and the implementation of critical policies aimed at river conservation and the enhancement of India’s water resources. His role was pivotal in pushing forward the agenda of sustainable development and parliamentary coordination.

In his second term as an MP, Meghwal was appointed the Chief Whip of the BJP in Lok Sabha, a role that underscored his leadership within the party and his expertise in legislative affairs.
