Mumbai Dindoshi Court Undertrial Escapes Police Custody After Hearing, FIR Registered At Kurar Police Station

On the short walk from a Mumbai courtroom to the jail van, an undertrial escapes police custody, the Mumbai Police say; an FIR is registered at Kurar police station and the search goes on. The allegations are untested.

Mumbai: The police are searching for Ibrahim Sajid Mujawar, an undertrial in an attempt-to-murder case, who allegedly pushed aside his escort and broke away after a hearing at the Dindoshi court on Friday, October 23, 2026, according to an FIR registered at Kurar police station [FIR against undertrial Ibrahim Sajid Mujawar, Kurar Police Station, Mumbai].

No court order has been reported, and the FIR is the only development on record. Every statement in it is an allegation that has not been tested. Mujawar is presumed innocent in the attempt-to-murder case, and nothing newly alleged against him has been proved.

From Court No. 10 to a waiting autorickshaw

As the police tell it, Mujawar was brought from Arthur Road jail on the required warrants and was in court by about 2 PM; the FIR places him in Court No. 10. The sitting ended at about 4:15 PM, and he was being walked to the vehicle that was to take him back to jail. There, the police allege, he pushed the escorting officer, broke free and ran across the road. The officer gave chase, but he got into an autorickshaw and drove off.

On that walk from the courtroom to the vehicle, the escorting police are the only safeguard. The material available does not make public the sections invoked in the FIR, the case number, or the police station that registered the attempt-to-murder case.

What the BNS says about escaping custody

Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 covers a person charged with or convicted of an offence who intentionally resists or illegally obstructs his own lawful apprehension, and also one who escapes, or tries to escape, from any custody in which he is lawfully detained for such an offence. The punishment is imprisonment of either description for up to two years, or fine, or both, over and above the punishment for the underlying offence. The material available does not say which provisions have actually been invoked in this FIR.

A separate episode in April 2026

Undertrials are kept in jail and produced before courts under escort on production warrants. In April 2026, Mumbai police said that another undertrial lodged in Arthur Road jail attacked a constable and fled the Sessions Court premises in south Mumbai after a hearing, and an FIR was registered at Colaba police station. That case is separate, and its facts have not been tested in court either.

The search continues

Both the attempt-to-murder trial and the new FIR will have to be decided on evidence, and nothing in this report is a finding against the accused.
